New Windsor Students

As students, we understand how challenging it may be getting information about the island. Alhumdulillah we can all relate to the feeling of being away from home (for many of us this is also the first time), having to make living arrangements, figuring out transportation, etc. For this reason we have compiled an extensive list of websites and phone numbers that you can use to your advantage when planning for your life on the island inshaAllah. If you are not attending Windsor University School of Medicine (ex. Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Medicine and Health Studies), you may still use this information, however it would be best to contact your respected institution of study for a better list of accommodations!

Windsor has a Housing Representative, Kimbo (869-762-4123), whose job is to aid you in finding a place to live. He will also come pick you up from the airport, and is supposed to give you an island SIM card if there are any available. Please call him in advance to discuss housing arrangements as well as the date and time you arrive so you can be picked up inshaAllah. We have also provided a short list of housing accommodations along with a map, which also highlights the route taken to get to the Windsor Campus, so you have a good idea of the area.

Frigate Bay - Living Arrangements (Recommended)

Picture
Frigate Bay is the best option to select when searching for a place to live. It is the part of the island where all the tourist come and stay, and it is also the safest area on the island. The rental fees however are one of the highest. There is a Windsor school bus that comes and picks up students in the mornings and drops them off after school, but you will need to make transportation arrangements if you need to go anywhere else on the island (ex. groceries, town, airport). Windsor University is located approximately 20 minutes away by car (including traffic). The Rams Supermarket (aka Little Rams) here is more like a convenient store (small with limited items). There are many other complexes in this area available for rent that are not listed, a a variety of restaurants catered towards vacationers, as well as a gym across the Golf Course.

    • This is where the musullah is located
      (room 113 for the sisters;
       room 114 for the brothers)
    • Angelus almost always has a wait list so please contact Manon ASAP to book yourself a room on time. You can also post on the MSA's Facebook Page to see if anyone is looking for a roommate.
    • Walking from Angelus to Rams Super Market next to Sugar Bay takes approximately 10 minutes

  • Though Silver Reef is close to Canada House, the complex itself is a very safe area to live in.
Canada House
  • This complex is just called Canada House because it has a Canadian Flag on it (hence it is not the real name)
  • We HIGHLY DISCOURAGE anyone to seek accommodations in this place as it has a repeated history of being unsafe.

Bird Rock - Living Arrangements (Recommended)

Picture
Bird Rock is another main area where majority of students live. Though the only place listed on the map is Bird Rock Beach Hotel, there are many houses whose rooms you can rent out privately. The Rams Supermarket located in this area (aka Bird Rock Rams) is the main location of the company, and is bigger with a larger selection of products as compared to "Little Rams" in Frigate Bay. Nearby is a Cash and Carry (equivalent to Costco), Best Buy Supermarket (very overpriced), and a Food court. There is a Shawarma stand in here where you can order halal chicken and lamb dishes (but not beef). None of the other places in the Food Court are halal (including some of the ice cream and cakes as some of the flavors are made with alcohol so please ask the vendor prior to purchasing!) There is also a gym in this area, behind Cash and Carry.

Lime Kiln - Living Arrangements

Lime Kiln is at the far side of town, closer to Ross and UMHS. There is a complex in Lime Kiln called Sea View Cove that is available. Close-by to here is the main location for Best Buy Supermarket, which is much bigger with greater product choices than the one in Bird Rock, and has a bakery. However, it is still over priced compared to the other supermarkets (Rams, IGA, Tropical Paradise). Driving west past this area will bring you to the gas station that is open 24 hours, Tropical Paradise (Supermarket), UMHS, and Ross in that order. Consider this option after looking into Frigate Bay and Bird Rock.

Cayon - Living Arrangements (not shown on map)

Cayon is just within walking distance from Windsor University. Here you have to arrange transportation to get to any other place on the island. It does have a high student population living amongst locals, however it is better recommended to pick Frigate Bay or Bird Rock. There is only private housing in this area, for which you will need to contact Windsor's Housing Representative, Kimbo (869-762-4123).

Basseterre (Town) - Point of Interests

Town is where majority of the activity occurs on the island. The streets are usually crowded during the day with slow moving traffic and a mixture of locals and vacationers going about their scheduled planning. IGA Value Mart is located here, which has relatively better prices than Rams along with fresher produce. If you are looking to rent a car, you will have to go to the Traffic Department and purchase a temporary license. The cost is $24 USD ($62.50 EC) for 3 months, or $65 USD ($125.00 EC) for 1 year. You will need to bring a valid driver's license from your country of residence, and a secondary valid photo-id (ex. passport). Remember that you will be driving on the left hand side, and it is mandatory for both the driver and passengers to be wearing a seat-belt. If you end up getting a ticket, you will have to go to the Magistrate Court House to pay the fees. The gas station here is not 24-hours so plan accordingly. The only 24-hour gas station on this side of the island is west past Lime Kiln.
